Bergrivier Municipality Internship: A Golden Opportunity for Aspiring Professionals
Bergrivier Municipality, located in the Western Cape province of South Africa, is providing a fantastic internship opportunity to aspiring professionals. The internship program, as per the National Treasury Guidelines for the Implementation of Municipal Financial Management Internship Programme (MFMIP), will run for 24 months, starting on 1 August 2023. The municipality is offering two internship opportunities, one for Financial Services and the other for Internal Audit & Risk Management.
The interns selected for the program will undergo practical experience and further training in strategic reforms in municipal finance. The internship program will provide an opportunity to learn about accepted municipal accounting practices, budgetary reforms, financial and supply chain management, reconciliations, and financial analysis. Interns will also learn about electronic collection of financial data, which is essential for the proper functioning of municipal finance.
To be eligible for this program, candidates must meet all the minimum entry criteria. The applicant must have completed a 3-year Bachelor’s Degree or National Diploma with majors in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Internal Auditing, and/or Risk Management.
They must possess a valid Code B driver’s license, computer literacy (MS Office Applications), and must be literate in at least two official languages of the Western Cape (Afrikaans/ English/ Xhosa), being able to speak, read and write. The candidate must possess good human relations skills, strong interpersonal skills, and communication skills.
They must be able to pay close attention to detail, have a strong sense of responsibility, and possess strong accountancy and numeracy skills. Basic knowledge of monthly reconciliations and financial & supply chain management processes is also necessary. The candidate must reside within the Bergrivier Municipal area (WC013).

Bergrivier Local Municipality is a local municipality that governs the towns of Piketberg, Velddrif and Porterville, as well as the surrounding villages and rural areas. It had a population of 61,897 as of 2011.
Successful candidates will be expected to sign a contract of employment, disclosure of benefits and interests, and a performance agreement (where applicable) with the employer. The internship program also requires interns to work overtime or be on standby, as well as render services in other parts within the municipal area, as required.
